Screencast Project
Project Overview
For my Digital Literacies class, I followed the principles of minimalism to create a how-to screencast recording in Camtasia. I showed viewers how to insert a video clip into text in PowerPoint.
Skills
- Digital literacies
- Minimalist documentation principles
- Video production
- User experience
Tools
- Camtasia 2025
- Microsoft PowerPoint

I created a seamlessly constructed, concise Camtasia video using several of its features including:
- Fades
- Intro and outro music
- Splits
- Spotlight and sketch motion annotations
- Zoom-n-Pan animation
I created simplicity for my audience of novice users by drawing boxes around the tabs and menus to click then spotlighting the actual option to select.
I eliminated extraneous audio and movements by splitting the video to create a smooth, easy-to-follow tutorial.
The three principles of minimalism I followed were:
- Allowing users to start immediately on meaningfully realistic tasks.
- Reducing the amount of reading and passive activity in training.
- Helping make errors and error recovery less traumatic and more pedagogically productive.
I encouraged users to follow along by creating user-centered language like “let’s” and “our” to show joint ownership in the process. Creating the sense of unity from the beginning primed users to actively participate in the tutorial.
